Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC by Cassander in the honor of his wife Thessaloniki, sister of Alexander the Great. Built at a time and very important for Greek history, while Hellenism began to spread in the East.
Since then due to the key position and the port was the hub of trade and development meeting cultures. There he Constantine the Great in 322 BC had built an artificial square port for his fleet, traces of which survive today in building foundations.
